GTA 6 gameplay: everything Rockstar has shown
Everything Rockstar has shown of the gameplay, mostly from An Extended Look, plus hands-on previews. Every point links to where it was said.
World & life
- Chapter-based campaign of roughly 80 hours: Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson: his latest playthrough took about 80 hours. The story is split into chapters like Red Dead Redemption 2 and encourages exploring Leonida between missions. Choices range from small to major and can change what happens next. Source
- Five counties, about ten cities and towns: Rockstar calls the map "very big" without giving a number. Preview estimates put Vice City alone at roughly twice the size of Los Santos. Every region has its own buildings, residents and atmosphere. Source
- Satellite-style in-game map: Replaces the flat road map of earlier games. Optional content and encounters are not always marked; some things you only find by driving around. Source
- Ryde Me rideshare and public transport: Fast travel via taxi, bus, train or the Ryde Me app. You can talk with drivers during the ride. Trams and buses can be boarded in the world. Source
- Activities shown so far: Pool, mini golf, kayaking, diving, parachuting, basketball, wrestling, fishing, monster trucks, the zoo. Working out and shopping can be done alone or together as Jason and Lucia. Source
- Wildlife checklist: Animals in the wild and in captivity can be examined and logged. Expands on the compendium from Red Dead Redemption 2. Dogs can be petted or scolded. Source
- Focus mode: Highlights nearby objects and useful details. Also helps to stay out of the police's line of sight. Source
- More than 600,000 NPC animations: Compared with roughly 55,000 in GTA V and 300,000 in RDR2. NPCs are art-directed individually and come in far more heights, weights and body types. They notice when you eavesdrop or follow them too long. Source
- NPC interactions like Red Dead Redemption 2: Greet, taunt, provoke or defuse anyone on the street. Some residents carry weapons and may start violence themselves. Threatening without firing can end a situation. Source
- The phone is a physical object: The camera moves to the character's hand when it is used. Snapmatic returns as a social feed you can browse and follow, but Jason and Lucia cannot post: they are fugitives avoiding a digital trail. Source
- Largest collection of radio and TV commercials in the series: Fictional products include the antidepressant Angstipan and the 30,000-calorie Prairie Sandwich. Source
- A shared safehouse: Jason and Lucia can live in the same home. Safehouses work more like the camps of RDR2, with people coming and going. At home you can shave or shorten hair; new styles need a barber. Source
- Bodies react to food and exercise: Workouts build muscle, too much food adds weight. Meals also restore a large amount of health. Source
- Optional romance: The two start with mutual interest; the player decides whether it develops. Doing things together strengthens the bond and can change how some scenes play out. Ignoring the other's messages weakens it. No mechanical bonuses either way. Source
Robberies & money
- Money matters more: Some story steps need a set amount of cash first. Earn it by stealing and selling cars, robbing businesses and stores, and bank heists. Source
- Fast or thorough: Blow the safe and damage part of the loot, or find the combination and keep it all. Longer inside means a higher chance the police surround the building before you leave. Many locations have a second exit. Source
- Rob together or alone: Jason and Lucia can hit targets individually or as a couple. Robberies done together also build their relationship. Source
- Fences: Stolen jewellery, vehicles and valuables are sold through specialised fences. Vehicle fences can tip you off about valuable cars, for example in police impound lots. Source
Wanted & police
- Six wanted stars are back: GTA V capped at five. One star is easy to lose; six stars is an all-out manhunt. Source
- Police only know what someone saw: Alerts come from witnesses or security systems. Responding officers get a description of what happened and who might be involved. Source
- Symbols show what the police know: Under the wanted meter: your face, your outfit, your vehicle. Outlined stars mean they are searching but have no confirmed description. Source
- Change what they recognise: A new haircut clears your description; a full outfit change hides your clothing; ditching the car breaks the vehicle lead. A hat or glasses alone is not enough. A mask worn during the crime and dropped afterwards keeps your face off cameras. Source
- Crime scenes stay active: The area of an offence remains a police zone for a while after you escape. Officers search the surroundings before calling it off. Source
- Split up to split the police: When both are identified, the pair can go separate ways. You can send your partner away and take the chase yourself. One protagonist can be busted while the other stays free. Source
- Escape on foot: Sprinting, vaulting and climbing were rebuilt for chases through alleys. Three stars or more in Vice City is dangerous because of the narrow roads and dense traffic. Source
Combat & weapons
- Limited weapon carrying: Two rifles and two pistols at a time. Extra weapons live in a vehicle trunk or at a safehouse, similar to the horse in RDR2. No dual-wielding. Source
- Redesigned weapon wheel: Swap weapons and items with R1 / RB. Confirmed items on the wheel: binoculars, body armor, flashlight, food and drink, duffel bags and trauma kits. Source
- Slow-motion targeting: A Dead Eye-style ability shown by a purple bar. Available to both protagonists. Source
- Non-lethal options: Shoot an enemy in the arm or leg, or shoot the weapon out of their hand. Threatening or suppressing fire can make police and civilians flee without a kill. Source
- Split health bar and trauma kits: Health shown in segments; trauma kits heal during fights. Enemies use cover tactically and the environment is partly destructible. Source
- Drive-by from any seat: Shoot from car windows, truck beds and while swimming. One protagonist drives while the other shoots during a chase. Source
- Stealth by crouching: Crouch is in; going prone is not. Cinematic slow-motion camera on particularly impressive takedowns. Source
- Criminal Profile: Rockstar's replacement for the Honor system. Not good versus evil: patterns of behaviour change how residents react and can shape parts of the story. Mission violence does not count against you; needless destruction does. Clean, efficient crimes raise your reputation as a professional. Source
Vehicles
- '55 Vapid Stanier: Vintage Vice City Pack (pre-order bonus). A classic sedan included in the Vintage Vice City Pack, stored in the Shore Court personal garage a stone's throw from Ocean Beach, with a weapon locker and a place to deposit stolen goods to be fenced. Included with every pre-order and any purchase before 20 November 2026. Source
- Security tiers for parked cars: Old cars open with a slim jim or a smashed window; modern ones need key-cloning tools unlocked through the story. Carjacking occupied cars still works, now with a struggle from the passengers. Source
- WAINK scanner app: Scan a parked car for value, registration cost, lock, alarm and tracker. Some high-end cars carry GPS trackers that report their position to the police; drive fast or ditch the car. Source
- Keep, register or sell: Stolen cars can be sold to a fence (damage lowers the price) or registered as your own. Unregistered cars eventually despawn; garages can store them until a fence removes the tracker. Source
- Trunk storage: Cars hold extra weapons, duffel bags and a change of clothes. A spare outfit in the trunk helps you shake a description during a getaway. Source
- Fuel and charging: Cars and bikes have a working fuel gauge; electric cars charge at stations. Fuel lasts a long time, so it is a detail rather than a chore. Source
- Heavier handling, higher top speeds: Overturned cars no longer flip back by steering. Traffic is denser and roads are narrower than in GTA V. Heavy crashes get a brief slow-motion moment. Source
- Detailed interiors and a vehicle menu: Working mirrors, adjustable seats, visors; a d-pad menu opens trunk, hood and doors individually. Source
- Pay & Spray and mod shops: Repaint to break a chase, repair, value or register a car; several mod shops with their own specialities. Nitrous is available for driving and racing. Destroyed personal cars can always be recovered for a fee via the Scooter Bros app. Source
Gameplay
- Two protagonists, instant switching: Shown in An Extended Look. Jason and Lucia can be switched between instantly, including during active sequences: drive as Jason during a chase, jump to Lucia and fire from the passenger window, then switch back without breaking the action. Source
- Physical progression: Reminiscent of San Andreas. Exercise builds muscle and strength, eating heavily changes a character's weight, and sleep, partying and food choices influence appearance and attributes. Source
- Criminal profile: Reputation with the law and the public. Each protagonist has a criminal profile that reflects their reputation with law enforcement and the population of Leonida, shaped by how reckless and violent they are. Source
- A state of five counties: Roughly ten cities and towns. Leonida stretches across five counties and about ten cities and towns, with plenty of discoveries deliberately left off the map to reward exploration. Source
- Activities shown so far: Monster trucks, pool, treasure hunting. Monster truck racing, pool and underwater treasure hunting were among the activities shown in the Extended Look, alongside the wildlife of Grassrivers and the Keys. Source
- Single-player at launch: PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. The game launches as a single-player experience on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on 19 November 2026. No PC version has been announced. Source
