PlayStation trophies, trophy level and privacy

PlayStation has the most elaborate achievement system of the big platforms. Four tiers, a points value per tier, a trophy level with its own tiers, and a privacy model that decides whether any of it is readable.

The four trophy tiers

  • Bronze, the most common. Usually for progressing through the game or small feats.
  • Silver, for harder challenges.
  • Gold, for major milestones.
  • Platinum, awarded once when every other trophy in a game (excluding add-on trophies) is unlocked. Not every game has one; smaller titles often stop at gold.

Each tier is worth points toward your trophy level. Bronze is worth the least, platinum the most, and the exact values were changed when Sony reworked the system in 2020. What matters for your card: the site shows how many of each tier you have per game and in total, and whether a game has been platinumed.

Trophy level

Your trophy level is calculated from the points of all trophies you have earned. Sony reworked the scale in 2020 so that levels start at 1 and go up to 999, with named tiers: bronze, silver, gold and platinum levels. Levels get progressively harder to reach. The number on your card is the level PlayStation reports, not a recalculation.

Privacy settings that block reading

EveryGameStat reads PlayStation through the same interface the PlayStation app uses for public profiles. Two settings decide whether that works. On the console or in the app go to Settings, Users and Accounts, Privacy, then:

  1. Gaming and media: Games and Trophies. Set "Who can see your gaming history" to Anyone.
  2. Make sure your profile itself is visible to anyone, under Personal Info and Messaging.

With either set to Friends only or No one, the site reports that the profile cannot be read, and shows nothing rather than an empty card.

Hidden games and play duration

Games you have hidden in your trophy list are hidden from the API too. Play duration is available for many PS4 and PS5 titles through the profile's game list, but not for every title and not for PS3 or Vita games. When a game reports no duration, the hours stay empty on your card.

What a platinum actually takes

The trophy list of a game is decided by the developer, so difficulty varies wildly. Some games hand out a platinum in a few hours; others require hundreds of hours or online trophies that become impossible when servers close. Trophy rarity, the percentage of players who unlocked each trophy, is included in what the site reads, so the game page can put the rarest first.
