How many hours have I played in total?
Every platform keeps its own clock. Steam counts the hours in Steam, Xbox counts the hours on your gamertag, PlayStation counts the hours on your PSN account and Epic counts Fortnite. None of them shows one lifetime number for everything you play, and none of them looks at the others. Here is where each one keeps your hours, and how to add them up without fooling yourself.
Steam
Steam shows the hours for every game you own, on the game's page and in your library, where you can sort by hours played. What it does not show is a lifetime total for the whole library. To get one, you would have to add up every game yourself.
Two things make the Steam number smaller than you might expect. Playtime only counts while a game runs through Steam, and a profile with private game details shows no hours to anyone else, stats sites included. Steam hours explained goes through what is and is not counted.
Xbox, including Game Pass on PC
Xbox shows time played per game in that game's stats. On a Series X or S, press the Xbox button, go to Profile & system, open My profile, switch to the Gaming tab, pick a game and choose Stats on its Progress screen. Games you start through the Xbox app on Windows count toward the same gamertag.
Not every game reports it. Some titles show no time played at all, and Xbox does not fill that gap with an estimate. Once a year, Xbox Year in Review adds up your hours for that year. More in how to see hours played on Xbox.
PlayStation
On a PS5, select your profile picture on the home screen, choose Profile and open the Games tab. Each game shows when you last played it and for how long, and PS4 games you played on the same account are in that list too. PlayStation Wrap-Up adds up one calendar year each winter. PS3 and Vita games have no recorded playtime. See how to see your playtime on PS5 and PS4.
Fortnite and the Epic Games Launcher
Epic says it plainly in its own help pages: there is no way to see your total Fortnite hours across all platforms. On PC, the Epic Games Launcher shows time played in your library when you switch to the list view. On a console, Fortnite is clocked like any other game. The stats Epic makes public do include the minutes you spent in Battle Royale matches, across every platform on the account. How many hours have I played Fortnite explains the difference.
Adding it up honestly
- Only add numbers that exist. A game that reports no playtime is not zero hours, it is unknown. Leaving it out keeps the total smaller but correct. Guessing makes it look complete and wrong.
- Same game, two platforms, two numbers. Minecraft on Xbox and Minecraft on PlayStation are separate clocks. Adding them is fine, because they measure different hours.
- Keep yearly recaps out of it. Year in Review and Wrap-Up cover one calendar year. Adding them to lifetime numbers counts the same hours twice.
- Games outside a platform, such as most mobile games or a PC game started without a launcher, are not counted by any of the platforms above.
Doing it here
Link the platforms you play on, read only, and your card adds up the hours each platform actually publishes, with the split per platform next to it so you can see what is counted. Nothing is estimated. For games no platform clocks, the free EGS Companion for Windows measures sessions on your own PC.
